School and Educational Acoustics

The 1st July 2003 has brought with it the introduction of Building Bulletin 93 (Part E4 of Building Regulations 2000, 2003 Edition BB93), and sweeping changes to how we must now design and construct schools. This document now directly replaces Part A of the DfES Building Bulletin 87.

The implications of the introduction of this new document are far reaching, as what was a guidance document has become mandatory, being part of the approved process to which all new school construction works must be completed.

The implications do not stop with BB93 being mandatory. Research has shown that acoustic conditions within schools can have a profound impact on pupils' learning and staff performance.

In turn, the requirements for BB93 are far more stringent than its predecessor BB87, in particular to assist in the integration of pupils with special educational needs into mainstream schools, and to improve overall standards and quality of educational buildings.

BB93 is available for public reference and can be downloaded from the Downloads page. However, Dragonfly Acoustics Limited can offer detailed advice on how to implement the requirements of BB93, or simply help you decipher what it's asking you to do!

We have excellent experience in interpreting the needs and requirements created by BB93 and in particular we have significant experience in integrating the requirements of BB93 into music and performing arts spaces.
